AWARENESS
NO, ITS NOT CURRENTLY ERUPTING
HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY WEEKLY UPDATE
U.S. Geological SurveyThursday, September 23, 2021, 7:55 AM HST
Activity Summary: Mauna Loa Volcano is not erupting. Rates of seismicity at the summit remain slightly above long-term background levels, but have not changed significantly over the past week. Other monitoring data streams—ground deformation, gas discharge, and visual observations—show no significant changes
During the past week, HVO seismometers recorded 88 small-magnitude earthquakes—all below M3.0—beneath the summit and upper-elevation flanks of Mauna Loa. The majority of these earthquakes occurred at shallow depths less than 8 kilometers (5 miles) below sea level.
PERSONAL OPINION—-
(which, come on, let’s be real reporters, local and usgs, etc. we know EXACTLY what that means “scientifically”,
and She ALSO is showing us her power in real time, so get with the program . 2021 style . Mauna Loa is gonna blow. Sometime soon, whether that be this eruption or next, next year or 5. WE MUST BE AWARE.
I PERSONALLY WOULD BET MONEY ON IT THAT ITS GETTING READY TO AS WE SPEAK, hence the OBVIOUS signs as it heads up to the top. π but heaven forbid they say that, for fear of causing mass panic. This shouldn’t cause “panic” lol. This is our LIFE WE LIVE IN THE WORLDS TWO MOST ACTIVE VOLCANOS LOL. Mauna Loa would go towards hilo area so even if it would come here it would take a while IS MY OPINION. we just need to frikin be aware. Hilo is the loa path, and you can bet within a hour the worlds volcano scientists will be here , like they did for PAHOA, but they won’t do here in Leilani to help SAVE the residents.
Summary
Its long submarine flanks descend to the sea floor an additional 5 km (16,400 ft), and the sea floor in turn is depressed by Mauna Loa's great mass another 8 km (26,200 ft). This makes the volcano's summit about 17 km (55,700 ft) above its base! The enormous volcano covers half of the Island of Hawai‘i and by itself amounts to about 85 percent of the area of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined.
The Hawaiian name "Mauna Loa" means "Long Mountain." This name is apt, for the subaerial part of Mauna Loa extends for about 120 km (74 mi) from the southern tip of the island to the summit caldera and then east-northeast to the coastline near Hilo.
Mauna Loa is among Earth's most active volcanoes, having erupted 33 times since its first well-documented historical eruption in 1843. It has produced large, voluminous flows of basalt that have reached the ocean eight times since 1868. It last erupted in 1984, when a lava flow came within 7.2 km (4.5 mi) of Hilo, the largest population center on the island. Mauna Loa is certain to erupt again, and with such a propensity to produce large flows, we carefully monitor the volcano for signs of unrest.
Measurements of ground deformation, using Global Positioning System (GPS) instruments, confirm that the surface of the volcano has not moved appreciably over the past week.
Gas concentrations and fumarole temperatures at both the summit caldera and at Sulphur Cone on the Southwest Rift Zone remain stable.
Webcam views have shown no changes to the landscape at the Mauna Loa summit or on the lower flanks of the volcano over the past week.
