The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for areas of East Hawaiʻi until 9:15 a.m.
At 5:42 a.m., radar indicated moderate to heavy showers over the Hāmākua, Hilo and Puna Districts, with rainfall rates near 1 inch per hour from Waipio Valley to Hilo to Volcano.
Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Honokaʻa, Papaikou, Mountain View, Pepeʻekeo, Honomu, Glenwood, Keaʻau, Hakalau, Volcano, Ninole, Hawaiian Acres, Orchidlands Estates, Laupahoehoe, Oʻokala, Pahoa, Paʻauilo and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
Minor flooding is anticipated on roads, poor drainage areas, and in streams. Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
This advisory may need to be extended beyond 9:15 a.m. if flooding persists.
Additionally, a flash flood watch is in effect throughout the entire island until this afternoon.
