Keiki and their families are invited to reach for the stars at the AstroDay celebration, Sunday, Nov. 14, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Kona Commons Shopping Center in Kailua-Kona.
Organized by the Mauna Kea Astronomy Outreach Committee (MKAOC), this free, open-air event is an entertaining and star-studded opportunity for the community to learn about the science of astronomy and the incredible discoveries being made by the telescopes on Maunakea. The Maunakea Observatories and other science-based and community organizations will offer colorful and informative “contact-less” science exhibitions, demonstrations, and activities. Free science kits will be available to take home while supplies last and the UH Institute for Astronomy will have a solar telescope on site to project views of the sun. Prize giveaways and a Scavenger Hunt are planned.
The Maunakea Observatoriesʻ Subaru Telescope, TMT International Observatory, Gemini Observatory, Canada France Hawai`i Telescope, East Asian Observatory/JCMT, University of Hawai`i Institute for Astronomy, and the W.M. Keck Observatory will participate, as well as the NSF Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, Las Cumbres Observatory and Pan-STARRS from Haleakalā. Onizuka Space Science Program, Center for Maunakea Stewardship, Hawai`i Science & Technology Museum, Hawaiian Electric, the `Imiloa Astronomy Center, International Lunar Observatory Association, UH Hilo Astrophysics Club, and the Thelma Parker Memorial Public & School Library will also be on hand with displays and activities.
All COVID-19 protocols will be observed, including face mask wearing, hand sanitization and social distancing. Kona Commons and event participants appreciate your kokua.

‘Make Your Own Mosaic’ workshop slated at Volcano Art Center”
Volcano Art Center is hosting a ‘Make Your Own Mosaic’ workshop at the VAC Ni‘aulani Campus in Volcano Village. This three-session workshop will be held from 10 a.m.-noon on Nov. 7, 14, and 21.
In this class you will create usable art under the guidance of expert mosaic artist Michael Reeder. Participants will learn the basics of mosaic art using a prepared 9-inch x 9-inch wood template on which they will develop their own design. Make a trivet or a wall hanging to keep or a heartfelt holiday gift. All supplies are provided but you are welcome to bring special pieces.
The class fee is $45 for non-members and $40 for VAC members, plus a $25 materials fee.
